Colorado Homeschool Laws

Now we discuss the homeschool laws in Colorado. If you have a state teacher certification there are no requirements to teach your children. Since most do not have that certification, it is important to know the Colorado homeschool requirements and follow them.

Parents have to file written notification of the intent to homeschool with a school district at least 14 days before they begin to homeschool, and they must do this every year. The written notification needs to include the name, address, age, and the number of hours of planned attendance, for each child they will be teaching.

There must be 172 days of instruction for each child, this average out to four hours per day of instructional contact. Subjects that must be taught are writing, reading, math, history, civics, speaking, science, the U.S. Constitution and Literature. Parents have to keep record that show attendance, tests and evaluations results, as well as immunization records. If the superintendent has any reason to believe the homeschool is out of compliance, these records must be produced.

Colorado homeschool laws require that homeschooled students must be either evaluated of tested at the end of grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. If a student tests below at or below the 13th percentile, of if their evaluation find that the student is not making required academic progress, the school district will require that the student must attend either a public or private school until the next testing period. First, they will be allowed the chance to be retested.
